Should You Hire Someone Full-Time or Stick to Contractors Weâre in the middle of the age of the gig economy. There are more freelancers and independent contractors than ever before, thanks in part to the availability of short-term gigs from businesses and the rise of new technologies that enable remote work. As a result, many new entrepreneurs have jumped at the chance to delegate tasks and build a pseudo-workforce using these inexpensive, short-term alternative employees. But if your business is growing quickly and youâre in need of more help, is an independent contractor going to be enough to serve your needs, or should you hire someone on full-time? Hiring full-time vs. contracting out is a choice that deserves careful consideration. Advantages of Independent Contractors Letâs look at some of the advantages of independent contractors: Roughly 15. 8 percent of the American workforce is currently employed in âalternative work,â or the gigs that keep the gig economy running. Thereâs no shortage of willing, able people in the freelance market who would be willing to work for your business, nor are they difficult to find (since they often market themselves). Hiring contractors gives you more flexibility when it comes to workforce allocation. If you only need a contractor for a few months, you donât have to hire them for longer than that period. If you want to seek an alternate provider, you donât have to go through the mess of firing them formally. In general, independent contractors cost less to hire than full-time staff members. Youâll only need to pay them for the work they actually do for your business, and their hourly rate often comes in lower than those of their full-time counterparts. On top of that, you wonât need to worry about tax and benefit payments, which can add another 25 to 40 percent of the employeeâs base salary. Even hour for hour, independent contractors are far less expensive. Though independent contractors still have some legal protection, you arenât as liable or legally vulnerable when you hire one. Full-time employees on your premises may sue you for personal injuries they sustain on the job, discrimination, and other legal hiccups. Advantages of Full-Time Hires On the other hand, there are some advantages to hiring someone full-time as well: Your full-time hires may still quit, but theyâll generally be more reliable than your independent contractors. Theyâre seeking full-time work because they want something stable, and theyâll be available 40 hours a week to do whatever you need help with. Hiring employees full-time is a perfect way to start a professional relationship. Your employee will learn new things and advance their skills as they work with you, and youâll learn more about their work style, strengths, and weaknesses as the years roll on. This is an extra value that your independent contractors probably wonât be able to add. Having full-time employees is something of a status symbol; people may form a first impression of your company by how many employees it has, and walking into a meeting with an employee by your side sends a powerful image about your companyâs strength. Itâs also helpful to have backup during particularly intense meetings or important networking events. Decision Factors There are pros and cons to each side, so how should you decide which option is best for you? It all boils down to these important factors: How much money do you have to spend? How much reliable revenue are you earning? The more money you have to spend, the more feasible a full-time employee becomes. The tighter your budget, the more you should lean toward contractors. Judging when to hire your first employee can be tough, since you wonât be sure how the role will evolve, or how your needs might evolve in the near future. If youâre still uncertain about how things will change, or if youâre early on in your businessâs growth, independent contractors are better. Personal preference. Most people naturally prefer to work with one type of worker over another. Your personal preferences can affect your professional relationships, productivity, and satisfaction, so donât be afraid to consider them (even though this should be a mostly objective decision). The Answer To Hiring Full-Time vs. Contracting is . . . Thereâs no right answer when it comes to this decision. All you can do is look at the pros and cons with an objective mind, consider the variables affecting your outcomes, and go with the decision you feel is right. You can always change your mind later if it doesnât work out as anticipated.

Why Your CV Database is a Giant Waste of Time Here at Bubble, we offer clients everything theyâd expect from a typical jobs board. From feature adverts and skyscraper banners to enhanced social media promotion, you can get it all at Bubble but thereâs one thing you canât get⦠and itâs something that really confuses (and annoys) a lot of our potential clients â" weâre talking of course about CV database access. What? A jobs board that doesnât give access to its CV database? Whatâs the point in that? Well, there are a number of points â" and itâs fair to say we didnât take this decision lightly. Yes, it makes us stand out from the crowd â" but we feel confident and stand by our decision because⦠well, to put it bluntly, we think CV databases are a big fat waste of time! Yep, you did read that right â" a jobs board that doesnât believe in the power of flogging all of its candidatesâ details to every hungry recruiter out there. And we have some pretty convincing points to back up our rather controversial decision. Here are a few reasons you might want to reconsider using CV databases to track down an employee in the future. CVs Are Out Of Date Think about when you were searching for your last job and you uploaded your CV to a jobs board/site in an attempt to catch a potential recruiterâs eye. When you got your new job, did you go back and take down your CV? Of course you didnât â" and neither did 99% of the people who were searching for a new job at the same time. 9 times out of 10, the CVs featured in a job boardâs database are old and out of date â" so they donât give an accurate reflection of the candidateâs work history⦠and thereâs a chance they might not even have the correct contact details. This means, should you use a CV database, thereâs a pretty strong chance you might get sent on a wild goose chase trying to track down a potential candidate. Similarly, when it comes to CVs in a job boardâs database, thereâs a strong possibility that the listed candidates might no longer be active and looking for a job. This means that even though you might think the job is perfect for them, if theyâre simply not looking, it might be a bit like trying to flog a dead horse. The end result? Youâve wasted a lot of time and youâre no further forward in any way. Generic CVs Itâs a well known fact that the best applications come from candidates who have specifically tailored their CV to the job in question â" but a lot of the time, the CV they upload to the database is a simple generic CV which they go on to modify. This means the CVs youâll come across in the database will only ever paint a generic picture of each candidate and might not focus on their key skills or knowledge they have that are perfect for the specific role youâre looking to fill. The result? You might overlook the perfect candidate because youâve only got a generic CV to go off⦠oh dear! Duplicated CVs Thereâs no getting around the fact that recruiters love job board CV databases because they get to get their hands on precious new names and CVs that they can add to their existing database⦠but thereâs a strong chance, particularly if theyâre working in a niche sector, that CVs available from the jobs board might double up with the existing CVs they have in their database. This means that although they might pay a jobs board £5,000 a year to access their CV database, thereâs a chance they might only end up with 20 or so new names and CVs to add to their database⦠and whoâs to say theyâre even going to be up to date or active?! Similarly, even if you get access to a handful of CV databases, thereâs a pretty strong chance some of them will double up at some point. Multiple CVs For One Candidate Weâre not sure about other job boards, but here at Bubble, we believe in the power of tailored CVs for each application â" which is why we let our candidates upload multiple CVs to their account when applying for jobs. Now, while this is great news for the candidate, this might not be such good news for a recruiter whoâs trawling the database looking for the perfect candidate. Why? Because they might have five or six CVs to read through from the same candidate⦠and really, what recruiter has got the time to do this?! Waste Of Money Want a list of potential candidates who are based in the right area and have the right skills? Thatâs what LinkedIn is for! OK, so it might take a bit more time and effort⦠but guess what? Itâs up to date and (the best part!), itâs free! Yes, you might have to pay for a Premium account if you want to send some InMails â" but even then, thereâs a strong chance itâs going to work out to be much more cost-effective than paying for CV database access from a number of job boards/sites. So there you go; five reasons CV databases might not be as worthwhile as you first thought. Our final thoughts? When it comes to CV database access, itâs more hassle than itâs worth. OK, we might be biased but we think job advertising is definitely the way to go. Why? Because you donât get any of the issues mentioned above. Think about it; youâre guaranteed active job seekers who will only ever put forward the right CV for the role⦠and if youâre buying a shed-load of adverts in one go, youâre normally guaranteed to get a pretty good rate. Online Networking Sites A Cautionary Tale The explosion of online networking sites has turned job search on its head and prompted many to supplement their traditional job search strategies with a Web 2.0 component to better market their candidacy and extend their career brand footprint and reach. Im a huge fan of leveraging Web 2.0 tools to complement a career management strategy, but it is important to understand the implications of your involvement on these sites and methods for successfully managing your online presence. Today I sat down with Rania V. Sedhom, Esq. who has researched the ramifications of these sites as they relate to employment decisions. She answers the questions that every job seeker should be asking before they set up their online profiles.How are recruiters and hiring managers using networking sites to check references? It varies, of course. But at a minimum they are reviewing candidate profiles to either support or refute information placed on resumes. If the recruiter or hiring manager knows some of a candidates friends s/he likely reaches out to them to discuss the candidate. If a candidate has a posted recommendation, some recruiters or hiring managers may reach out to the referrer for more information about their experience with the candidate. If there is information on a profile or a friends profile that makes the recruiter or hiring manager feel uneasy about a candidate or if the candidate is caught in a lie, then all inquiries stop and the candidate loses the position. If these hiring managers and recruiters are internal to the company, the candidate is not protected under the Fair Credit Reporting Act (but may have some rights under state law.)How does downloading applications on social networking sites affect my privacy settings and potentially my job search? Some sites allow you to make certain pieces of information private. That means that only your friends see that information. However, once you download an application, your privacy settings may be for naught. For on e thing the sites administrator has access to all your information. Also, even when you erase something from the website, the administrator retains the information so your information may never truly be purged.If I am in job search, why do I need to be concerned about what my friends display on their profile pages? Some of your friends may have inappropriate pictures or contents on their profiles. How would you expect a would-be employer to react for example, to your picture or name on a friends page where your friend says that s/he and his/her friends enjoy smoking blunts? What if some pictures were lude? Or perhaps your friends page also has a blog and that blog happens to say something negative about your would-be employer or some of their recent press?I thought that the LinkedIn endorsement feature was a great way to build my credibility as a candidate. Are there any downsides to posting endorsements? It is a great way to build credibility. Some caveats though. For instance, mak e sure that your endorsements come from a business associate. Second, dont have mirrored kudos because that sends the wrong message to people.What are your top 3 cautions when using business/social networking sites? Assume that (1) everything is visible by everyone, (2) you are being judged by what you and your friends say about you, and (3) it is a great method to boost your career if done correctly.Rania V. There are good writers among us There are good writers among us A recent blog post by Kris Dunn for The HR Capitalist rubbed me the wrong way, and Id like to take the opportunity to defend my industry. I fear the post will leave many readers with a bad impression of the field and put doubt in the minds of some considering hiring a professional resume writer. In this job market, that is doing a disservice to those who would benefit from a careers professional. While there may be less-than-stellar writers marketing their wares online and calling themselves professional resume writers, there are many exceptionally talented writers among us who have helped numerous job seekers with resume development and job search correspondence. To supplement Ms. Dunns post, Id like to share some of my own tips for selecting a professional resume writer. * Certified with one or more leading career association I would go one step further and verify credentials with the organization as there unfortunately have been cases of writers implying they are certified when they are not. The value of certification is twofold: (1) the independent and impartial assessment of a writers abilities by a peer group, and (2) commitment to the industry. * Client testimonials provided as postings on the writers website, recommendations on LinkedIn, or fans on Facebook. * Published work and preferably with multiple authors as that shows that more than one editor selected their work for inclusion. The authors of resume guides tend to be seasoned resume writers in the industry so selection for a book can be considered approval from respected peers. * Structure and professional process in place Agreements, forms, an organized process are signs that the writer takes his/her job seriously and is running the business professionally. This can also be reassuring when working online with a writer as something concrete in an otherwise virtual situation. * Prior recruiting or HR experience Having worked as an executive recruiter or in human resources does not automatically make someone an effective writer, but it does provide a valuable combination of perspectives. Something to consider. The bottom line: do your due diligence as you would when hiring any new professional or service provider, and youll most likely develop a relationship with a talented professional resume writer who can provide immense value to your job search.
